Russell's index business began in 1984 and it now captures 68% of the market share for all US institutional equity products reporting a benchmark , with 59% of institutional assets being benchmarked to Russell Indexes (as of 31 December 2011). Today, Russell Indexes offers a wide array of benchmarks, and strategic and innovative indices built for investability. Within Europe, in 2011 Russell launched an index series with BATS Chi-X Europe and, in 2012 it launched a number of indices including the Russell Europe SMID 300 Index that NYSE Liffe has listed on its Bclear platform.
